Start a walk in the app and head out. Location is recorded during walks you start, and only then.

Every street you walk turns orange, and the coverage % for your neighbourhood and city goes up.

Collect stamps
Walk past a landmark and its stamp is yours, along with a small fact about the place.
Already walk with Apple Health or an Apple Watch? Your past walks are imported, so they’re on your map from day one.

Questions
Which walks are imported?
Walks saved in Apple Health that have a route: Apple Watch walking workouts, and walks from other apps that save to Apple Health. They’re imported in the background once you allow access. Daily step counts alone have no route, so they can’t go on a map.
Do I need an Apple Watch?
No. Untrod records walks with your iPhone while you’re out, so you can start with nothing in Apple Health at all. A watch only means more of your earlier walks are already waiting to be imported.

Is my location tracked all the time?
No. Location is recorded during walks you start, and only then.
